Knock

Knock may only be a small town, but it gained international fame in 1879 when an apparition of the Virgin Mary turned it into a place of pilgrimage, which is Ireland's most visited town. Each year, on 21 August, thousands of pilgrims come to Knock to visit the shrine. The Knock Folk Museum, located in the grounds of the Knock Shrine, details the story of the Knock Apparition, and also the lives of the people living in the area at the time.

County Mayo is located on the Atlantic west coast of Ireland, with many long sandy beaches. These contrast sharply with Europe's highest sea cliffs near Ballycastle. Further inland Mayo's towns are essentially still market towns, serving as regional centres for the surrounding villages. The pubs act as meeting places for both locals and visitors alike. Beautiful lakes are dotted all over the county, from small local lakes to enormous lakes surrounded by imposing mountains. County Mayo draws tourists all year round, ensuring that the general standard of accommodation is excellent, offering something for every kind of visitor. The active traveller will enjoy the variety on offer here, with great opportunities to go fishing, horse riding, cycling, hiking, and a fantastic choice of golf courses.

There are many historical sites to be found all over County Mayo, giving witness to its long history. Several museums across the county give an excellent insight into country life and history. Visit the Museum of Country Life near Castlebar, or experience 5,000 of Irish life at Céide Fields, in the north of the county.
