Loch Ness is one of the main attractions and widely known for the legendary tales of the Loch Ness Monster. Overlooking the river Ness and the Moray Firth is lnverness Castle, and close by, with its sombre atmosphere is Culloden Battlefield, where in 1746 Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites fought against his distant cousin, the Duke of Cumberland, who led the Government troops.
Today, the marshes of Culloden are calm and peaceful, belying their bloody history.
There is plenty of shopping in the town, with chain stores and antique shops on winding streets, or modern precincts and Victorian markets.
Bars, cafés and restaurants serve every kind of cuisine imaginable, from traditional to the more exotic.
A visit to Scotland is not complete without sampling the unbeatable choice of whiskies on offer.
