Doncaster/Sheffield

Doncaster

The town has a long history, but the Georgian town centre we see today was built on the wealth that came with the stagecoach trade of the 18th century. Doncaster racecourse was built as a result of horse breeding for the stagecoach trade. The area around the town, the Borough of Doncaster, has much to offer: museums and galleries such as the Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery offering natural history, archaeology, local history, fine and decorative art; The Regimental Museum of the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry; Aeroventure (specialising in post-war aviation); the Trolley Bus Museum.
The town centre has a selection of arts and crafts shops, designer boutiques, and of course all the major high street names.

Sheffield

Known world-wide for its steel, the city’s history goes back to pre-Roman times, can be traced via Mary Queen of Scots to the Middle Ages when cutlery production really took off here. Sheffield has a lot more to offer besides: the beautiful Winter Garden, the impressive Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul, the imposing Victorian Town Hall, and stately homes of international fame like Chatsworth and Hardwick Hall are only a short distance away. In the greenest city of England you are never far away from one of the more than 200 parks, woodland areas, or gardens.

Further afield

Just five miles from Sheffield city centre is the Peak District, an area of outstanding natural beauty that includes England’s first Natural Park. Here you’ll find open moorland, limestone dales, caves, natural springs, and traditional stone-built villages. The village of Bakewell is here, famous for its tarts, and the spa town of Buxton. The Peak District is the perfect place for the more active traveller: cycling, hiking, climbing, water sports, paragliding, etc, etc. Spectacular wild life and nature are everywhere – the perfect place to get away from it all!
