La Coruña

Galicia’s liveliest city, La Coruña or A Coruña depending on whether you speak Castilian or Gallego, is located in the north-west of the province on the Gulf of Ártabro. It’s spread out on its own peninsula facing the Atlantic and has beautiful wide beaches. The town has grown up around a natural harbour along the Avenida de la Marina, from where the splendid white balconies covered in with glass that give the town its nickname of “Crystal City” can be best admired. La Coruña is a very popular summer destination, so it’s advisable to book accommodation well in advance. On a summer’s evening the bars in the area around the Rúa Franja and the Praza María Pita keep going all night, and the visitors all go down to the harbour in the morning to watch the day’s catch being brought in and auctioned off by the town’s fishermen.

Galicia has a long and chequered history giving rise to interesting historical sites throughout the province: Celtic invaders made this corner of Spain their home, and later the Romans took over, followed by the Moors who were there only briefly and left little trace. The area has a very distinctive character. Some very tasty white wines are produced here, similar in taste to Portuguese ‘green’ wines. Each farm has its own trellis of vines, as well as patches of land stocked to the hilt with peppers, maize, peas, cabbage, and the best potatoes in the country!

Galician seafood is ranked amongst the best in the world, and you can’t afford to miss some classic recipes, such as empanadas (large flat pies filled with eels or lamprey, sardines, or meat such as veal or pork). The rugged , rocky coast harbours a variety of crustaceans and shell fish - some so unique that they only have names in Gallego!
The province produces some excellent cheeses, such as San Símon da Costa (with a smoked, spicey flavour), tetilla (creamy, buttrery taste, also used for melting into various dishes), or Arzua Ulloa (creamy, so soft it’s almost spreadable).
When visiting Galicia you must try the typical local tapas meal consisting of pulpo alla gallega (tasty morsels of octopus with sweet peppers), grilled sardines, fresh bread, tetilla cheese…
